Haidong Geumdo โ€” Korean Sword Classes in Calgary

The art of the Korean sword: sweeping forms, disciplined footwork and a stillness you can't find on a treadmill. Rare anywhere in Canada. Taught here, in NE Calgary.

The art

Not kendo. Not cosplay. Geumdo.

Haidong Geumdo (ํ•ด๋™๊ฒ€๋„) is a Korean sword discipline built around flowing multi-opponent forms rather than one-on-one duelling. Training moves through stances, drawing and sheathing, dozens of pattern sets (gumbub), candle-and-paper cutting control drills, and โ€” for senior students โ€” bamboo cutting.

Beginners train with a wooden sword (mokgum); safe, weighted practice swords come later. No live blades are ever used in regular class.

Who joins: ages 10+, adults very welcome. Many students train Geumdo alongside taekwondo; others do sword only. No prior martial arts required.

Benefits

What sword training builds

Deep focus

A sword form demands total attention to grip, edge angle and breath. It is moving meditation with consequences for sloppiness.

Posture & grace

Geumdo builds long, controlled movement โ€” shoulders, hips and core working as one line. Desk workers feel it within weeks.

A living tradition

Learn an art few people outside Korea ever encounter, from an instructor trained in its lineage.

Classes by arrangement: Haidong Geumdo sessions are scheduled by arrangement with Grand Master Cha, on their own or alongside a taekwondo membership. Call (403) 277-7937 or email info@redpx.com to book a time and ask about rates. See our membership options.

FAQ

Sword class questions

Is it safe? Are the swords real?

Regular classes use wooden and blunt training swords only, with strict etiquette about where blades point. Live-blade cutting is reserved for senior students at special supervised events.

Do I need taekwondo experience first?

No. Geumdo is a complete art on its own with its own belt progression. Total beginners start with stances, grip and the first form.

Can kids join?

From age 10, yes โ€” sword training demands a level of stillness younger children usually don't enjoy. Under-10s are better served by our kids taekwondo classes first.
