Here is the number, up front, because schools that hide it usually have a reason: at Red Phoenix, the journey from white belt to black belt runs through ten belt levels and takes a typical student about three years of training twice a week. Some do it a little faster, many take a little longer, and both outcomes are fine.
Why ten levels?
Each colour belt (geup) bundles a specific set of skills: stances and basic kicks at the early belts, poomsae (forms) and combination kicking through the middle ranks, sparring craft and teaching responsibilities near the top. Testing happens when the student is ready โ usually every three to four months early on, stretching longer at the senior ranks where the material gets deep.
The ladder is clear, not mysterious. Every student knows exactly what stands between them and their next belt. That clarity is half the motivation.
The two plateaus everyone hits
Plateau one: green-belt boredom (roughly month 10โ14). The novelty is gone, the black belt is still far away, and soccer season just started. This is where parents matter most โ not with pressure, but with routine. Students who simply keep attending sail through in a couple of months.
Plateau two: the red-belt wall (roughly month 24โ30). The material gets genuinely hard: jumping and spinning kicks, longer forms, real sparring pressure. This plateau isn't boredom โ it's difficulty. And it's the most valuable stretch of the whole journey, because getting through it is the actual lesson of the black belt.
The belt is just cloth. What you build reaching for it is the part that stays.
What "black belt" means here
A first-degree black belt (1st dan) at our school can perform the full colour-belt curriculum on demand, spar with control against any partner in their division, and help teach a junior class โ because senior students lead warm-ups long before they test. It is a beginning, not a trophy: the ranks above first dan are where the art opens up.
Can adults make the same journey?
Yes, and they often do it faster. Adults in our teen & adult classes train with intent and don't need the games layer. Three years of two classes a week is three years, whether you're nine or thirty-nine.
