  • Parents often tell us how a Tae Kwon Do has improved their children's focus, concentration, and self-discipline. Improved school grades often accompany improved focus. Physically, many students report that they see improvements in coordination and balance, and are delighted with new-found flexibility.

  • In general, 3.5 - 5 year old students should consider the Saturday morning classes. Classes for Kindergarten-age students (5 or 6 years old) occur on either Saturdays or on weekdays after school. After a trial class, Master Cha can advise on the class that would be best suited for your child. For primary and elementary-age students, classes are organized generally based on their experience level in Tae Kwon Do and students are grouped with others near their age. Most older teenage students can attend the adult class.

  • Classes will include the following compenents on a rotational basis:

    • Stretching - Flexibility exercises are a key component of Tae Kwon Do.
    • Warm-up - Activities to promote blood flow and warm up the muscles.
    • Breathing and Concentration exercises - These meditative exercises help the students focus on control and concentration, and allow the student to develop self-discipline.
    • Conditioning- Basic aerobic activities to promote cardiovascular fitness and endurance.
    • Poomse (pronounced Poom-say) - Also referred to as forms or patterns, are a series of choreographed movements that combine kicks, blocks, and punches learned at a particular belt level.
    • Non-contact sparring - Also called one-step sparring, or pre-arranged sparring. Involves partners learning a choreographed set of offensive and defensive actions, to apply class material without full body contact.
    • Self-defense (Hosinshul) - As Tae Kwon Do is a sport with origins as self-defense, all students learn self-defense training. At the higher belt levels, students will learn more advanced techniques.
    • Kyuk Pa (Breaking boards) - Students show off their Tae Kwon Do techniques, combined with concentration, focus, and physical fitness by breaking boards using kick, strikes, or punches. Once students complete a belt test, and if they desire, they will learn the step-by-step techniques involved in breaking boards
  • There are ten belt levels, with the progression as follows: white belt, yellow-stripe belt, yellow belt, green-stripe belt, green belt, blue-stripe belt, blue belt, red-stripe belt, red belt, black-stripe belt, and finally, black belt.

  • Each belt level has specific curriculum requirements outlined to progress to the next level. Requirements include fundamental skills including specific kicks and punches, combinations, sparring.

  • Students attending lessons twice weekly will generally complete the requirements to progress to the next belt level in about three months. Most students take about three years to reach black belt level.

  • Once students have completed their first belt test (for yellow stripe level, about 3 months after they begin), students are invited to participate in sparring portion of the Tae Kwon Do class. Generally, Monday and Tuesday classes focus on Poomsae and fundamental skills and techniques, and Wednesday/Thursday classes include sparring practice.

  • All required equipment is available for purchase at the do-jang. Students require a chest protector, head gear, hand and forearm guards, shin and foot guards, a groin guard, and a mouth guard.

  • Participating in competitions is up to the student and his or her parents.

  • Classes have resumed at Red Phoenix with a continued focus on safety. In our spacious new location, class sizes remain small, instructors wear masks and sanitize equipment and surfaces regularly, while still providing high-energy classes. Learn more about our safety precautions
